Brownsea

SHARE

The Island of Brownsea, United Kingdom, has limited food production. The island’s buying of food has then to be sustainable to reduce the negative impacts on the environment, especially due to tourism consumption. Local women, with the support of SMILO, the Anna Lindh Foundation and the European Union, cooperated to address this issue and develop a more sustainable tourism.

What is the project?

In the framework of the “Women on Island, Leaders of Sustainable Tourism”, the National Trust of Brownsea Island cooperated with BH Fish, a locally involved company, to reduce the negative impacts of imported food on the island, particularly during the high touristic season, through the production of local fish and seafood.

Project: Women on Islands – Leaders
of Sustainable Tourism

Place: Island of Brownsea, United Kingdom

Thematic: Landscapes

Budget: 65,213.74€

Funding:
Anna Lindh Foundation,
European Union

Partners:
National Trust
BH Fish
Brownsea Island Committee

What ARE the objectiveS?

  • Develop ecotourism through a more sustainable food consumption
  • Raise awareness among tourists and local population

How?

  • Supported BH Fish to review their Food Safety Plan for crab processing to ensure compliance accross all its activities to buy and sell food.
  • Developed BH Fish marketing plan and website to better promote their activity and sustainable food.
  • Organisied a fish and seafood tasting event on the island.

POSITIVE IMPACTS

  • Local BH Fish products are better ranged.
  • Transparent sourcing and traceability of fish and seafood.
  • 400 visitors, staff and volunteers participated to the tasting event and saw how food can be produced simply and locally.
  • Locals and visitors benefited from awareness campaigns and looked more interested in where their food comes from.
  • The National Trust will continue to follow-up the implementation of the project and longer-term impacts with BH Fish.
