Producing biogas by reducing organic waste pollution on Santa Luzia

waste

Santa Luzia

SHARE

On the island of Santa Luzia, Cape Verde, a project of local transformation of organic waste and human feces into gas is being implemented. This sustainable methanisation process is made possible with a HOMEBIOGAS technology and aims at reducing pollution and insalubrity on the island.

What is the project?

Though the Santa Luzia island is uninhabitated, many fishermen temporarily frequent it throughout the year. However, they are not yet developing sufficiently respectful actions for the environment, letting human feces, toilet paper and other organic waste behind them.

To address this issue, SMILO financed a pilot project through the pursue and installation of a mini HOMEBIOGAS module for organic waste treatment on the Portinho site, the main landing place for fishermen during their fishing activities.

Location: Island of Santa Luzia, Cape Verde

Thematic: Waste management

Budget: 3 455€

Partners:

Ministry of Education and localschools,

Biosfera NGO,

HomeBiogas Brasil

What ARE the objectiveS?

  • To encourage local fishermen to reduce their waste on the island
  • To provide fishermen with a green and waste-free energy for cooking

How?

Implementing a HOMEBIOGAS module to treat organic waste.

The waste treatment will allow the production of gas directly usable for cooking. Then, the water required for each use of the module is 1.2 liters, which will be provided by the desalinator located on the site.

POSITIVE IMPACTS

  • Reduction of organic pollution and macro waste (feces, toilet paper, empty gas cylinders)
  • Increase of sanitary conditions
  • A better organic waste management
  • Implementation of a renewable energy pilot project and its promotion within local communities (schools, fishermen)
  • Ministry of Education and national government are incited to develop the HOMEBIOGAS technology at a larger scale
  • Elimination of the cost of gas cylinders
