Santa Luzia

SHARE

On the uninhabited island of Santa Luzia, Cape Verde, SMILO financed the purchase and installation of a solar desalinator. This innovative and sustainable solution will allow a better and easier access to water for local fishermen and conservation national and international teams.

What is the project?

To implement a system that allows temporary visitors to have a permanent access to soft water in an island where the only well provides brackish and non-drinkable water.

Place:
Island of Santa Luzia, Cape Verde

Thematic: Water

Budget: 9 416€

Partners:
National Direction of the Environment,
Reserve of Santa Luzia,
Association of the Fishermen of Salamansa,
Associação Amigos do Calhau

What ARE the objectiveS?

  • Provide a permanent access to water on the uninhabited island
  • Facilitate human activities of fishermen, reserve guards, researchers and NGOs
  • Reduce the transport of water and waste related to water recipients

How?

  • Acquisition and implementation of a solar desalinator: a small photovoltaic system provides the necessary energy.
  • Trainings of all the nature conservation professionals to guaranty the good functioning of the desalinator.

POSITIVE IMPACTS

  • Permanent access to water on different island spots, the device being lightweight and working on well water and sea water
  • Reduction of the waste related to water recipients
  • More comfortable conditions for nature conservation professionals and fishermen

REPLICABILITY

This solution is easily replicable as it involves a very low-cost maintenance.
