"Support for the development of the Sustainable Islands Initiative"
Duration: 2017 – June 2023
Project partners: l’Agence de l’Eau Rhône Méditerranée et Corse (grant of € 267,141.00 to the Conservatoire du littoral)
PROJECT DESCRIPTION
The aim of this project is to support the development of the Sustainable Islands Initiative (SMILO) in its pilot phase. The support of the Agence de l’Eau Rhône Méditerranée et Corse enable the development of a cooperation network bringing together the various stakeholders involved in the sustainable development of small islands.
It is also enabling the tools and the SMILO certification process to be tested on the pilot sites involved in the approach. The pilot sites are spread across several geographical areas/ecoregions, guaranteeing greater representativeness and presenting complementary sustainable development challenges. This project provides strategic and financial support, as well as business expertise and cross-disciplinary skills to enhance the SMILO approach.
Activities based on 4 themes:
Support for the general coordination of SMILO and its transition at the end of the programme to the SMILO system (to ensure that the project is properly implemented and sustained and to provide support towards autonomy).
– Creating a bank of initiatives by identifying, compiling and promoting good practice that can be replicated in island and coastal environments.
– Creation and coordination of the international network for sustainable islands, with the identification of priority sites and the creation of a network of expertise along the lines of PIM (Petites Îles de Méditerrannée)
– Testing the “sustainable islands” label and assessing its relevance, its social and institutional appropriation and its added value in terms of triggering action on 8 pilot sites (France, Tunisia, Croatia, Senegal, Cape Verde, Polynesia and the Philippines).
