GENERAL DESCRIPTION
Gombrani Islet exhibits characteristics in terms of small size, formation of calcarenite structure, biodiversity value, naturalness and rarity of various key native plant species not found elsewhere on Rodrigues Island
ENVIRONMENTAL DESCRIPTION
There are other plant species endemic to Rodrigues that have been found on Gombrani islet including the best preserved sample of native species from a plant community typical of the calcarenite substrate. It is therefore a priority and urgent to channel the financial, technical and human resources needed to improve the conservation of the biodiversity of the Gombrani islet and its surrounding waters. The work of Smith et al. (2004) opened a major stage for the conservation actions of the Gombrani islet through its proposed management plan for the Gombrani islet in 2004. In this perspective, the Association Ter-Mer Rodriguez drew its strategies to improve the conservation of biodiversity on and around the islet Gombrani based on the fabrics that a planned management already in place. However, there is a need to integrate the biodiversity action plan into the conservation policies and strategies of the Regional Assembly of Rodrigues.
SOCIO-CULTURAL CONTEXT
All activities carried out on Gombrani islet have both direct and indirect impacts on the state of the islet. The stakeholders and their activities mapped here provide a comprehensive understanding of each person’s interests and influence in relation to the overall Gombrani biodiversity conservation project. A major component of the five-year action plan planned as part of the vision document for the sustainable management and conservation of the islet is the elimination of invasive alien plant species representing a major threat to biodiversity, as well as the conservation and the reintroduction of keystone species known to have been present or to have thrived on the islet
