GENERAL DESCRIPTION
Nosy Ankao is a remotely located island in the Levens archipelago, the marine section of the Loky Manambato protected area in North East Madagascar. Nosy Ankao is surrounded by coral reefs and a steep continental shelf resulting in a unique mix of oceanographic features harboring an incredible high level of biodiversity.
ENVIRONMENTAL DESCRIPTION
An excerpt from Obura et al., 2011, states that although there is relatively low fish abundance there is high fish diversity, likely due to habitat diversity at Nosy Ankao where reefs have more complex structures and there is a relatively high coral cover and increased water clarity. The Loky Manambato protected area also presents a diverse range of birds, reptiles, insects, and lemurs and therefore, attracts many international tourists to the region resulting in job opportunities in the tourism sector and sustainable economic development for local communities. Local communities rely on terrestrial and marine ecosystems as a source of food and income, therefore conservation efforts to protect the environment and wildlife is a high priority for all involved.
SOCIO-CULTURAL CONTEXT
The island of Nosy Ankao is where the luxury resort Miavana by Time + Tide is located in. The logistics of the resort are closely managed by the company Ankao Management S.A. On an annual and quarterly basis, the company submits an Environmental Impact Assessment report to the National Environment Office and the Mayor’s Office. For each new social and environmental programme, the local community is consulted and its implementation is dependent on their endorsement.
