GENERAL DESCRIPTION
Jibondo is one of four inhabited islands in the Mafia Island Marine Park. The other islands are Chole, Juani and Bwejuu. All of the islands are in the marine park and front line to the challenges of conservation and sustainable livelihoods.
SOCIO-CULTURAL CONTEXT
Islamic island with two main mosques, and three main madrasa (Koran schools). Government kindergarten, primary and secondary school (new -only Form one in 2022). No electricity. The islanders depend on purchased or collected firewood, a few have gas stoves for cooking. Piped fresh water from mainland Mafia (marine pipeline). They also have an extensive rainwater collection tank for washing, livestock and gardening. They have one small clinic for primary health care with one doctor and one nurse. Most of the islanders are concerned with marine activities (Men – net, line and madema fish traps), the women are involved in seaweed farming and octopus fishing. Some are engaged in other business like food business, local shops and local restaurants, phone charging and solar powered television and entertainment (two main venues).
