A shredder to better manage green waste on the Levant island

SHARE

On the Levant island, off Hyères south of France, the syndicate of co-owners of Héliopolis set up a new system of green waste management with the support of SMILO and the Prince Albert II of Monaco Foundation. The new system is based on shredding, instead of burning this waste on the island.

What is the project?

To implement a more ecofriendly system of green waste management to reduce negative impacts of the past one.

Place:
Levant island, France

Thematic: Waste

Budget: 47,623.50€

Partners:
Syndicate of Héliopolis
National Park of Port-Cros
Région Sud

What ARE the objectiveS?

  • Draw up a sustainable green waste management plan
  • Reduce the negative impacts related to burning
  • Propose an ecological material for local gardening

How?

  • Identifying the issue by listing the different types of green waste to be treated
  • Writing a waste management plan, including a collecting plan for volunteers
  • Choosing and purchasing the right material, i.e. 2 shredders: a big one for the coastal path, and a smaller one easier to remove on the island
  • Setting up a dedicated area for green waste storage, rearranging a former burning zone

POSITIVE IMPACTS

  • Reduction of burning activities on the island, mitigating fire and health risks
  • Greenhouse gas emissions have been reduced
  • 50 island inhabitants asked for this shredding service
  • The shredded material is available for free for decoration or compost
  • This experimentation was shared with other Mediterranean islanders in Croatia
