Lastovo is the most remote island in Croatia. The access to many resources, including tourism, is complicated for this territory and its inhabitants. Local institutions and entrepreneurs cooperated to find sustainable alternatives to develop tourism on the island, based on a traditional local product: olive oil.

What is the project?

The National Park of Lastovo and OPG Zoltan Trojkovic, a local producer of olive oil led by a woman, combined a sustainable farm working with the development of a traditional and agricultural tourism

Project: Women on Islands – Leaders of Sustainable Tourism

Place: Lastovo, Croatia

Thematic: Landscapes

Budget: 65,213.74€

Partners: Nature Park of Lastovo
OPG Zoltan Trojkovic
Lastovo Island Committee

What ARE the objectiveS?

  • To raise awareness among islanders and visitors about local sustainable production and consumption.
  • To promote the tradition of local olive oil production at an international scale, and the role of women in entrepreneurship
  • To favour local biodiversity by protecting endemic species of olive trees

How?

  • Organised an event to plant olive trees and taste the oil
  • Planted 60 new olive trees on a new plot and making new cuttings
  • Updated OPG Zoltan Trojkovic new website to better communicate on its activities
  • Participated to an international olive oil competition in London to promote its tradition

POSITIVE IMPACTS

  • OPG Zoltan Trojkovic received the Silver Quality Award in the international olive oil competition in London, and increase the visibility of Lastovo’s local production
  • Islanders, students and visitors discovered the oil production process, from the tree to the bottle
  • Olive seedlings were created to favour biodiversity conservation and help raising awareness among visitors and inhabitants
  • Digital communication has been improved to gain more visibility
