Sorting waste at source in Gorée, Senegal

SHARE

In Senegal, off the coasts of Dakar, the small island of Gorée is pushing forward a sustainable waste management system through its project “Gorée Sett Fepp” (“Gorée Totally Clean” in Wolof).

Rewarded in 2018 by the SMILO Sectorial Award for Waste, the Island Committee and its partners keep developing solutions to optimise the selective sorting of waste at source.

What is the project?

“Gorée Sett Fepp” has extended its selective sorting at source program to 28 new pilot sites.

Location:
Island of Gorée, Senegal

Thematic: Waste management

Funding: SMILO Islands Fund

Partners:

Board of Initiative
and Tourism of Gorée (SITG)
Municipality of Gorée

What ARE the objectiveS?

To develop a selective sorting of waste at source in order to:

  • Ensure efficient waste management on the island
  • Reduce uncontrolled waste deposit

How?

The project partners have equipped the pilot sites with:

  • 2 trash cans: a brown one for organic waste, and a black one for solid waste (plastic, metal, glass)
  • Bags, red trash cans and stainless steel trash cans to collect biomedical waste
  • Stickers to raise awareness on sorting instructions among the local population

On 5 December 2020, these sorting bins were put in place in the new pilot sites and the awareness campaign was launched.

For the occasion, more than 200 volunteers actively participated, including 28 divers to clean up the bay.

POSITIVE IMPACTS

Now:

  • 38 Households
  • 2 Health structures
  • 3 schools
  •  2 local public institutions have been sensitised and provided with sorting waste material.
  • Nearly 3.5 tons of waste collected
  • 240 trees planted to strengthen the plant cover of the island

Also:
  • Effective treatment of a part of the green waste resulting from the maintenance of municipal and private green spaces.
  • Significant reduction of waste volumes that need to be transported to the mainland, hence reduction of GHG emissions, and impact on marine biodiversity.
  • Local community is more well-informed about how to selectively sort waste.
  • Re-use of the compost on the island
  • Replication potential:very high
