In Santa Luzia, shelters to facilitate conservation operation

Biodiversity

Santa Luzia

SHARE

On the island of Santa Luzia, Cape Verde, two shelters have been built and installed by the local association Amigos do Calhau to benefit the National Direction of the Environment and the Biosfera NGO in their implementation of actions to protect the island ecosystem.

What is the project?

The uninhabited island of Santa Luzia is one of the most important spots of turtles Caretta-caretta nesting of the Cape Verde archipelago, with a population of approximately 500 egg-laying turtles. It also counts several endemic seabirds.

To support their protection, SMILO financed a program aiming at implementing two removable shelters to assist both NGO and national institution in their mission of preservation.

Place: Island of Santa Luzia, Cape Verde

Thematic: Biodiversity

Budget: 16,821€

Partners:
Associação Amigos do Calhau
Biosfera NGO
National Direction of the Environment
Association of the fishermen of Salamansa

What ARE the objectiveS?

  • To preserve turtles and seabirds
  • To improve the accommodation conditions of the volunteers, biologists and technicians temporarily working on the island

How?

  • Building two removable 15m² shelters made of maritime plywood (adapted to local climate conditions) with local workforce
  • Settling the shelters on a pre-existent concrete slab and close to the toilets built a few years earlier
  • Maintaining the shelters through the Biosfera NGO presence.

POSITIVE IMPACTS

  • 20 to 30 volunteers, biologists and technicians have better accommodation conditions between June and October (turtle nesting season)
  • The Biosfera NGO save money (no more tents to buy)
  • The shelters can be removed and benefit to National institution to work on seabirds’ preservation
  • Temporary jobs for locals were created
