Paros

SHARE

The island of Paros welcomes more than 720,000 visitors each year, most of them coming in a narrow time during summer. To counter the negative effects of mass tourism, the local stakeholders, partly led by women initiatives, implemented initiatives to diversify the resources coming from tourism, in activity and on time.

What is the project?

FOTOESSA, local producers of wine, souma and beers, and Women’s Association of Paros cooperated to develop an application in order to guide visitors towards more sustainable activities and to generate a new model of tourism.

Project: Women on Islands – Leaders of Sustainable Tourism

Place: Paros, Greece

Thematic: Landscapes

Budget: 65,213.74€

Partners:
Fotoessa, Women’s association of Paros,
Local producers

What ARE the objectiveS?

  • To counter mass tourism effects.
  • To promote local heritage.

How?

  • Created an interactive application, including a map with wine and cultural heritage routes.
  • Organised experiential visits and tours.
  • Promoted cultural heritage through narrative activities and information sections.

POSITIVE IMPACTS

  • Creation of a pilot app to guide visitors to discover the island in a new way.
  • Relevant existing initiatives were linked.
  • The island cultural heritage was promoted.
  • FOTOESSA will keep on following-up the implementation of the application, supporting local community in the longer-term.
