SHARE

In the Emerald Sea, Madagascar, public authorities, Universities and local communities are collaborating to participate to the preservation of the area and its wonderful environment through cartographic and assessment activities.

What is the project?

The Diana Region wishes to foster sustainable and responsible tourism whilst protecting its natural and cultural heritage to the benefit of the inhabitants. In order to assist the Region in its sustainable planning project, SMILO financed several activities through its Islands Fund and its “Grants for Solutions for Small Islands”.

Place: Emerald Sea, Madagascar

Thematic: Landscapes

Budget: 45,500€

Partners:

Regional Directorate of Fisheries,
Regional Directorate of Ecology,
Environment and Forests,
Regional Directorate of Tourism, University of Diego, Local municipalities, Local NGOs

What ARE the objectiveS?

  • To map the marine ecosystem, including coral reefs
  • To delimit fishing and turtle nesting areas
  • Reinforce local equipment for waste management and surveillance of the area

How?

  • Mapping the sensitivity of the habitats of the marine ecosystem, especially the coral reefs, to the use and mooring of boats
  • Acquisition of a motor boat and the equipment to guarantee the staff’s security.
  • Organising cleaning campaigns on the islets, purchasing sorting materials and implementing composting of green waste

POSITIVE IMPACTS

  • Reduced pressure on the marine and terrestrial ecosystem
  • More regular presence of guards on the islets: Reinforcement of control and surveillance
  • Evacuation of waste
  • Improved access on the site (transport of staff, materials, water and waste disposal)
  • Reduction in the environmental impact of investment projects
